Understanding the Different Types of Depression Pills

August 22nd, 2011

Depression is a common problem in our modern society.  It can stem from any number of causes and it can often be hard to diagnose.  Fortunately, it is treatable but this may take some time.  While a lot of people may visit some sort of mental health professional, other people are also taking depression pills.  Medications like these are meant to treat various forms of depression and have been proven to be quite effective in most cases.  Before taking any depression pills, however, it can be a good idea to understand the different varieties.

MAOIs

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors are a variety of depression pills that have been used to treat depression for a while.  The problem with these depression pills is that they have a number of adverse side effects.  While these side effects may be experienced by a minority of users, they have been significant enough to cause mental health professionals to stop prescribing them.

TCAs

Tricyclic antidepressants are an older form of depression pills.  These medications were used for quite some time but have grown out of favor.  Part of the reason these depression pills are no longer prescribed very often is because of the side effects.  Many TCAs can cause problems like weight gain and sexual dysfunction

SSRIs

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are the most common variety of depression pills.  SSRI depression pills are the newest variety of depression medication and they work by regulating the body’s production and absorption of serotonin.  This is a chemical that has been linked with mood and imbalances can cause severe depression.  Many of the most common depression pills are SSRIs.

Depression Pills

Depression is a tough problem to treat.  There are as many forms of depression as there are people who suffer from it.  While psychotherapy can be a big help, many people have also turned to depression pills.  While depression pills can be very effective at treating depression, it’s important to remember that they aren’t without side effects.  If you’re thinking of taking depression pills then you should make sure to discuss all of the possible side effects before beginning this form of treatment.

Visit a psychiatrist

Once you have visited the psychologist you can visit someone who will be able to prescribe you the depression pills which should help you the most.  Your experience with the psychiatrist may be more clinical than what you experienced with the psychologist.  This is because they are trying to figure out which depression pills will be best.  After a few visits, the psychiatrist should be able to write you a prescription for one of the many different depression pills.
